I found myself talking back to the tv.
It was a commercial for some frozen prepared meal and the gist of the message was that you are too busy to cook all that difficult, time consuming, home cooked food. So why not just stop and pick up this convenient, in-one-bag package?
"But it's not that hard!" I protested. Much to my mom's amusement.
And then she and I had a very interesting conversation about the ways that food industry marketing has convinced us that real food is just too hard and time consuming for our busy lives. We have come to believe that home cooked, nourishing food is the purview of those rare, lucky, skinny-cause-I-have-a-high metabolism, angelic toddler, have-it-all-and-look-good-doing-it types.
And that's just not true. We might not all have gourmet, three course meals on the table every night. But everyone is capable of planning their week in such a way that the majority of the time there is preservative free, nourishing, delicious food on the table.
What would it take for you to feel comfortable and confident about rejecting processed food? Do you feel that its too time consuming? Is cooking intimidating? Is it the planning and shopping? The solutions are out there. :)
Loved this post because its so true. My husband and I have been paleo for almost three years and I found once I removed all the convenince food from the house it was pretty easy. Also getting a crock pot! It's the ultimate " I'm too busy to cook" tool. I can throw anything in and walk away. I also think that doing the Dave Ramsey program helps as well because while getting out of debt we decided we wouldn't be eating out so we have no choice but to get creative in the kitchen.
