When I think of home decorating, I picture images straight out of the Pottery Barn catalog. If I had the money, I would seriously consider ordering whole rooms. Since my wallet doesn’t stretch that far, I look to those catalog images as inspiration. So when I came across this lovely little NOELsign on pinterest that was inspired by this Pottery Barn product- it was a MUST on my Christmas craft list.
There is something about three dimensional letters that adds so much texture to a wall. I loved the deep red and touches of brown in the original but wanted a slightly darker color to match my velvet table runner.
{Materials}
Wooden letters ( I did NOEL)
Red paint
Brown paint (Raw Umber)
Textured Material (if you don’t want smooth paint)
Hot Glue Gun & glue
{Process}
1. Paint your letters. I wanted a deeper red so I used red as the base coat. Once they were dry, I added a second coat of Raw Umber. While the second coat was still slightly wet, I lightly brushed with a quilted paper towel that was scrunched in a ball (that’s a technical term, by the way). I topped this with a very light coat of the red.
2. Once dry, hot glue the letters together in which ever arrangement suits you.
3. Hang with a nail or prop on a shelf.
See how complicated and difficult that was? Definitely something you should leave to the professionals.
*ahem*
About that……..
I liked the result of this so much that I’m planning on doing an “O Holy Night” version in cream and gold. I find it really difficult to find pretty Christmas décor that isn’t either annoyingly cartoonish and commercialized or really expensive. This project offered a satisfying and economical alternative.
